Laconicum:
relax like the Romans did

The gentle and heart-friendly sauna

It’s no wonder that saunas are so popular nowadays: they not only strengthen the immune system, boost metabolism, and help detoxify the body but they also provide deep relaxation for both body and mind. People in ancient Rome were already aware of these benefits, with their bathing culture being a key part of social and cultural life. The laconium has its roots here – one of the main areas in Roman baths, along with the Caldarium and Tepidarium. In this article, we’ll tell you what the laconicum is, how it works, and how it can enhance your well-being.

What is a laconium?

A laconicum is a dry sauna with moderate temperatures ranging from 55 to 65°C and low humidity, around 15 to 20%. This makes it much gentler than its “hotter” counterpart, the Finnish sauna. The mild heat in a laconicum is evenly distributed through heated walls, benches, and floors. Combined with the low humidity, this results in slow, steady sweating. A typical session lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, followed by a cooling-off and relaxation phase, similar to other sauna experiences.

What are the benefits of a laconicum visit?

Sauna sessions have a lot of great benefits for both the body and the mind. When it comes to the laconicum, these effects are achieved in a particularly gentle way that’s easy on your circulation. Sweating helps your body detoxify by getting rid of toxins through your skin, which also gets cleaned and nourished as the warmth opens up your pores. This process reduces impurities and enhances your skin’s appearance. Plus, spending time in the laconicum boosts your circulation, metabolism, and immune system. The gentle heat also helps relieve muscle tension, ease pain, and reduce stress. All of this combines to create a deep sense of relaxation, both physically and mentally.
