Ear candling treatment:
relaxing and healing

Ancient remedy for earache and vertigo

Did you know that ear candling is a natural way of treating of various physical as well as mental complaints? Ear candling was already used centuries ago by the Native American ethnic group “Hopi” and other primitive peoples from around the world. In addition to its positive effects on our body, ear candling also helps promote and maintain our overall health and well-being.

How does ear candling work?

For the ear candling treatment, cone-shaped hollow candles with a length of 20 to 30 centimetres are used. These candles are made out of beeswax, honey essences, essential oils, gauze, powdered medicinal plants (e.g. sage, camomile, St. John's wort, and thyme), and cotton. A safety filter in the lower part of the candle prevents hot wax from dripping into the patient’s ear during the ear candling treatment. The patient then lies on one side of their body with the ear to be treated facing up. Their hair is covered with a towel. Now, the candle is placed with light pressure on the external auditory canal and lit at the upper end. For personal security, we do not recommend that you carry out the treatment by yourself. It should always be done and monitored by a second person. Once the candle has burnt down to the specific marker, it’s removed from the ear and extinguished with water. The patient then rests for another 15 to 20 minutes.

What are the effects of ear candling?

Lighting the ear candle creates a draft in the ear, which in turn creates a slight overpressure.  As soon as half the candle has burnt down, the air current rises, relieving this pressure. The rising air gently massages the ear drum and helps to regulate ear pressure. This also promotes blood circulation and lymph flow in the ear, and helps remove waste products within in the ear. A win-win situation for the immune system. At the same time, the vacuum gently draws out wax and debris from the ear. And there’s more: during an ear candling treatment, the ear’s reflex zones are stimulated. A soothing, calming and pain-relieving experience. The treatment also helps to promote well-being, as the pressure equalisation has a positive effect on breathing and the heart rate and thus on the entire body. The gentle crackling of the candle also calms busy minds.

When is ear candling indicated?

An ear candling treatment is used for acute and chronic complaints in the ear and head area, including the treatment of hearing loss, ringing ears, and tinnitus, to relieve headaches and migraines as well as colds, sinus pain, and sinus pressure. In addition, ear candling has proven to be a great complementary treatment method for nervousness, inner restlessness, stress and exhaustion, as well as sleep disorders and hyperactivity. The use of ear candles is strongly discouraged in cases of perforated eardrums and acute ear infections.
