Everything about the popular hair removal method

From shaving to hair removal creams – it’s no wonder that depilation is one of the most popular methods of hair removal: It is completely painless and guarantess silky soft and smooth skin. Read on to learn more about depilation, it’s various form, and its sister: epilation.

What is depilation?

The term “depilation” refers to the surface-level removal of body hair. In contrast to epilation, which removes body hair from the root, depilation only removes the visible part of the body hair that protrudes from the skin.

Pros and cons of depilation

The pros are quite obvious: When done correctly, it is completely painless. Plus, it can be integrated into everyday body care to save time. It is also perfect for quickly removing hair on larger areas of the body. The effect, however, only lasts a few days due to the superficial hair removal, as the hair quickly grows back again. Razor burn, razor bumps, and skin irritation are possible side-effects. To prevent them, always depilate in the direction of the grain and moisturise the skin well afterwards. When shaving, it is also recommended to use shaving foam or gel and only use sharp and clean razor blades.

What types of depilation are there?

One of the most popular forms of depilation is wet shaving. It is fast and easy and can be incorparated in every shower and bathing routine. The skin is covered in shaving foam or gel beforehand so that the razor can easily glide over the skin and cut the hair close to the skin surface. Alternatively, razors with integrated shaving gel pads can be used.

With dry shaving, on the other hand, the hair is trimmed to the desired length at the surface of the skin. The skin isn’t silky smooth as the trimmer blades are positioned at a slightly greater distance from the skin surface to protect it.

An alternative to shaving are hair removal creams. These are applied to the skin and, due to the sulphur compounds they contain, break down the keratin structure of the hair after a short exposure time.
