Sights and destinations

Culture in Val Venosta/Vinschgau

Holidays in South Tyrol’s Val Venosta/Vinschgau have a lot in store for culture fans: numerous sights are silent witnesses of ancient Roman settlements; proud castles, strong forts and solemn churches give a glimpse of medieval times; and contemporary museums give insight into the most diverse themes centred on South Tyrol’s culture and mountains.

Glorenza/Glurns, the smallest town in South Tyrol

During your holidays in South Tyrol’s westernmost region Val Venosta/Vinschgau, you should not miss to visit Glorenza/Glurns, the smallest town in South Tyrol. The impressive city walls are still perfectly preserved, enclosing the charming medieval town. Long time ago, Glorenza/Glurns was an important trading town. If you walk across the historic alleys and elegant archways, past the noble houses, once home to the bourgeoisie, you will feel taken back in time. If you come across this region during your holidays in South Tyrol, visit the gothic parish church San Pancrazio/St. Pankratius with the Roman tower, located right outside the city walls. Alternatively, take a stroll to the town square in the centre; the square connects the lower and the upper town and is the ideal place to stop for a rest and take in the unique ambience of the smallest town in South Tyrol!

The sunken tower of Lake Resia/Reschen

Are you already familiar with the trademark of Val Venosta/Vinschgau? Lake Resia/Reschen in the locality of Curon/Graun provides the power for the town of Glorenza/Glurns. A bell tower peaking out of the water is the only visible remnant of the village, located underneath the surface. The village was flooded in the summer of 1950. In the course of a backwater project, hundreds of families who had been living in Curon/Graun had to leave their homes when 677 ha of land were flooded. Today, the tower is a protected site and a great sight during holidays in South Tyrol’s Val Venosta/Vinschgau.

Marble from Lasa/Laas: the white gold

Marble from Lasa/Laas is a limestone, which is mined in the Ortler Mountains. The marble from Lasa/Laas was already popular in the antiquity. It was used to build the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta, a great number of churches and later for sculpting. Today, the marble of Lasa/Laas is still widely appreciated and used, for instance, for the tube station in New York. If you spend your holidays in South Tyrol between April and October, you can participate in a guided marble tour and visit the glistening white rocks.
