What is microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as mesotherapy, gently moves fine needles over the face to cause miniscule puncture marks and activate the skin’s natural healing processes. The treatment is performed using a derma pen, an electric device with a tip cartridge made up of tiny needles, or a derma roller, which is a small handheld roller with a rotating part made up of tiny needles. Depending on the length of the needles, microneedling not only reduces wrinkles, but also helps to improve the appearance of scars, cellulite, or stretch marks. The number of microneedling sessions depends on the patient and the skin problem intended to treat.
What types of microneedling are available?
There are two types of microneedling: cosmetic microneedling and medical microneedling. Cosmetic microneedling uses short needles with a maximum length of 0.1 to 0.3 millimetres. These penetrate only the top layer of the skin and thus help to reduce fine wrinkles and enlarged pores. Medical microneedling uses longer needles with a length of up to 3 millimetres that penetrate deep into the dermis, where they stimulate collagen production. For this reason, medical microneedling is used for deep wrinkles, scars and acne scars, as well as stretch marks. Regardless of the procedure used, it is important to moisturize the skin after the microneedling treatment and to protect it from sun exposure, makeup, harsh cleansers, and peels for a couple of days. Depending on length of the needles, the skin requires between two and eight weeks to regenerate, which is why a second microneedling treatment should never be performed sooner.
When is microneedling used and what are its effects
Microneedling is used to combat various types of skin problems. These include fine and deep wrinkles, but also scars of any kind (acne scars, surgical scars, burn scars, etc.), pigmentation disorders, stretch marks, and cellulite. But how does it work? The skin usually renews itself every 28 days. Microneedling accelerates the regeneration process by stimulating blood circulation as well as the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid.
